James Carter Beard was born in Cincinnati, educated at Miami University of Ohio, and studied law under Rutherford B. Hayes. He was admitted to the bar, but pursued a career as an artist instead, following the tradition of his father and siblings. He taught briefly, served in the Civil War as a hundred days soldier, and found success as an illustrator, eventually moving to New York, where he worked as a staff artist for Scribner's and Appleton's.
